Meaning
The Mount
Why read it
It makes a compact argument for Allah's existence, and it is the surah that moved Jubayr ibn Mut'im when he heard it from the Prophet ﷺ.
Key point
Or were they created by nothing, or were they the creators [of themselves]? (52:35)
Historical Context
A Meccan surah that opens with five oaths, including the Mount where Allah spoke to Musa and a Book inscribed on an unrolled parchment, and states that the punishment of the Lord will surely occur and none can repel it. It describes the Day, the scene of Hell and the Paradise of the God-fearing, and answers a series of accusations against the Prophet ﷺ.
Main Themes
The oaths
Verses 1-6 swear by the Mount, a written Book in an unrolled parchment, the frequented House, the raised roof and the sea set aflame. Commentators identify the frequented House with the Bayt al-Ma'mur in the heavens.
Hell and its denial
Verses 9-16 describe the Day when the heaven sways and the mountains move, and the disbelievers being told, "Is this magic, or do you not see?"
The God-fearing and their families
Verses 17-28 describe the reward of the God-fearing in gardens and bliss, with their offspring who followed them in faith joined to them, and their asking one another about their former fear of Allah.
Accusations answered
Verses 29-44 answer the charge that the Prophet ﷺ is a soothsayer, a madman or a poet, and ask whether they were created from nothing or were their own creators.
Patience and glorification
Verses 48-49 tell the Prophet ﷺ to be patient for his Lord's decision, since he is under His eyes, and to glorify with praise when he rises, at night and at the setting of the stars.
Important Verses
52:21
Families joined
And those who believed and whose descendants followed them in faith, We will join with them their descendants, and We will not deprive them of anything of their deeds.
52:35-36
Created by nothing?
Or were they created by nothing, or were they the creators [of themselves]? Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Rather, they are not certain.
52:48
Under Our eyes
And be patient for the decision of your Lord, for indeed, you are in Our eyes.
