Hadith & Popular Descriptions
We include authenticity grading for each narration below — not every widely-repeated description of a surah comes from an equally strong source.
The origin of the idols' names
Ibn Abbas (RA) said that these were the names of righteous men among the people of Nuh. When they died, Satan inspired their people to set up statues at their gatherings and to name them after them. Over time, when the first generation had passed and knowledge was forgotten, the statues were worshipped.
Sahih al-Bukhari. This is a report from a Companion about the history of the names, not a statement of the Prophet ﷺ.
