Why read it
Unique among the Quran's content for directly correcting the Prophet ﷺ himself, widely cited as evidence the Quran was not self-serving composition.
Key point
80:1-2 — "He frowned and turned away because the blind man came to him."
Historical Context
Revealed after a specific incident: the Prophet ﷺ was engaged in conversation with senior Quraysh leaders, hoping to interest them in Islam, when Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum — a blind companion already Muslim — approached seeking to learn from him. The Prophet ﷺ, focused on the leaders he hoped to persuade, frowned and turned away from Ibn Umm Maktum. This surah was revealed directly addressing and correcting that moment.
Main Themes
A sincere seeker outweighs a reluctant audience
The surah's core correction: Ibn Umm Maktum's sincere desire to learn was of greater worth than the attention of Quraysh leaders who may not have been genuinely receptive at all.
Self-correction within revelation
Highly unusual in religious scripture generally — the text directly critiques the conduct of the very person receiving it, rather than only addressing outsiders or past communities.
Signs in creation and the Day of Judgment
The latter half shifts to signs of Allah's power in food, rain, and plant growth, before describing the chaos of the Day of Judgment, where even close relatives flee from one another.
Important Verses
80:1-4
The frown
"He frowned and turned away because the blind man came to him. But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified?" — the direct critique opening the surah.
80:5-10
The contrast drawn explicitly
Contrasts the Prophet's ﷺ attention toward one "who thinks himself without need" (a Quraysh leader) against his distraction from one who "came to you striving [for knowledge] while fearing [Allah]" — naming the imbalance directly.
Hadith & Popular Descriptions
We include authenticity grading for each narration below — not every widely-repeated description of a surah comes from an equally strong source.
The context of revelation
Classical tafsir sources, including accounts traced to Aisha (RA), describe the specific incident with Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum that prompted this surah's revelation.
Widely reported across tafsir and sirah literature as the established occasion of revelation (asbab al-nuzul) for this surah.

Why would the Quran criticize the Prophet ﷺ directly?

Classical and contemporary scholarship alike point to this as evidence against the claim that he authored the Quran himself.
Who was Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum?
A blind companion of the Prophet ﷺ, already a Muslim, whose sincere approach seeking knowledge — while the Prophet ﷺ was engaged with Quraysh leaders — prompted this surah's correction. He later served as one of the Prophet's ﷺ appointed callers to prayer (muezzins) in Madinah.
