Hadith & Popular Descriptions
We include authenticity grading for each narration below — not every widely-repeated description of a surah comes from an equally strong source.
How the Prophet ﷺ became aware of the jinn
Ibn Abbas (RA) reported that the Prophet ﷺ had not recited to the jinn nor seen them. He was going with some Companions to the market of 'Ukaz when the devils were prevented from hearing news of heaven and they were sent against them. Some who had gone toward Tihamah passed the Prophet ﷺ as he prayed Fajr with his Companions at Nakhlah. They listened to the Quran and returned to their people, saying they had heard an amazing Quran. Then Allah revealed this surah.
Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. Other reports, such as one from Ibn Mas'ud (RA), describe a separate occasion when the Prophet ﷺ met the jinn and recited to them, which scholars understand as a different event.
